This year is the 75th Anniversary of the Newtown Amateur Dramatic Society. The society was formed in 1934 and has
undergone many notable changes since then. Originally meeting in a room in Community House, Park Lane, it progressed after
20 years to the purchase of some land and a hut behind Crescent House, Milford Road.
The first performance, without a raised stage, took place in the Autumn of 1969. A few years later, the Society was able to purchase the building with help of funds raised over the years and various grants.
In order to mark its 75th Anniversary and the 40th/41st year at Powys Theatre, the Society has planned many celebratory activities culminating in a Dinner-Dance in 2010. It is intended to have an extended season for the 75th, with hopefully a repeat performance of our very first production, The Barrats of Wimpole Street; a full or part performance of a play written by Reg Newman (past Chairman) whilst a prisoner of war under the Japanese; an Open Day and exhibition of the Society's many costumes; an invitation to local youth groups and other Thespian players to perform at our Theatre, and many other events through the season.
To accompany these events, the Society will be compiling a historical document consisting of memories from ex-members and theatre goers and extracts from the Society's records and photographs. It is planned to produce a DVD of past and present snippets, photos, videos and comments on all the Society's activities over the years. To that end, contributions are invited from anyone with a memory, comment or request for further information. If you have any memories, photos or suggestions for our celebrations, please feel free to fill in the form below or email us at nads@powystheatre.org.uk.
